-Percy Weasley-
Who is this Dummy?
Percy Weasley is a character from Harry Potter. He's one of Ron Weasleys brothers and is the third eldest between Charlie and the Twins. His most notable action is leaving his family during the fifth book to join the ministry. But he returns to them in the end. He's described as "prissy" and "stuffy" and an overall huge book nerd.
Why... this guy?
My honest answer, I have no fucking idea. He has, I think, a total of less than ten lines? I don't even remember why I liked him, I don't even think I did when I first read the books in elementry school??
I don't remember when I first started liking him so much, but I know that its been a long time. I don't even like Harry Potter anymore, I hate really JK Shitbag and hate almost all of the story choices, the only times I touch it with a ten foot pole are when I decide to rewrite the story every year or so.But THIS guy? I'm stuck with him. There's been gaps where I don't think about him much but he always comes around and infects my mind once a year or so. It's a curse at this point.
No, really... WHY this guy???
Generally? I like Percy Weasley because he's a character that is undervalued and overlooked, both in fandom and in universe. He strives for good and perfection but can be blindsided by his stubbornness which leads him down bad paths. But, he still has the courage to realize that he messed up and apologize for what he's done.I'm not going to sit here and say that this is all intentional, or that I'm not reading too much into this one-dimensional character. I am. J.K. Rowloffacliffanddie didn't intend to write Percy as anything more than a nerdy stick-in-the-mud who fucks off his family but still comes back for that happy ending. He's not complex. But, I don't care. Honestly, I've always loved the characters that the writers so obviously don't care about. The characters that have no deeper motivation. Because I love the idea of: "but what if they did?". What if these were people who had complex, thoughts and motivations, who had feelings. And that's how I feel about Percy. I know he's not deep, but to me at least, he is.Now, I present: Me going on a too-long rant analyzing why I like him without mushy feelings. Aka. I analyze what tropes around him made me stick with him like a fly on a sticky substance.First of all, he's a nerdy asshole. I love nerdy asshole tropes in media! Not even particularly nerdy characters, just characters that are intelligent or are otherwise pretty knowledgeable and are also assholes. And nerdy asshole, is what Percy Weasley is. It's literally his only descriptor throughout the books.Next, the familial angst. This is probably my most obsessed about aspect of him. I know there are a lot of people that demonize the other Weasleys in Percy-centric stuff. They make them super mean and abusive towards him and, I do NOT subscribe to this interpretation at ALL.BUT, I do subscribe to the idea of him being, or at least feeling, neglected by his family. I feel like it's a pretty realistic thing since his family is so big and his other siblings tend to be loud or trouble-makers that require more attention. I can also imagine him feeling left-out or like an outside because of how different his interests are to the rest of his family (he likes reading and staying outside but his family is really into sports) plus I totally believe that Mrs. Weasley has some favoritism problems.I think he didn't have the best home life, but his family isn't evil. His parents and siblings definitely love him and care about him, but he didn't feel loved by them. Y'know? And finally, him and Oliver Wood. Gosh, I love these guys. I ship them so hard you have no idea. They're a niche ship, but that's just because Percy and Oliver aren't the biggest characters. It's shipped mostly because they're canonically roommates in school and have such wildly different personalities (Percy being a up-tight book nerd and Oliver being a rowdy sporty Quidditch player) BUT they're deceptively similar. They both have a lot of passion for what they like and are confident in their abilities, they're also both stupidly stubborn which can cause more than a few arguments.I'll probably go into better detail in my headcanons section for him, but for now this is who Percy is and why I like this dumb nerdy jerk!
